PFAS stands for "per or poly fluoroalkyl substances." These are chemicals that were commonly used since the 1940s for a multitude of reasons, including firefighting and non-stick pans. There are thousands of chemicals that can be classified as PFAS.
PFAS is a "forever chemical," or a chemical that does not break down naturally. Maine's industrial past means that certain areas within the state have heightened concentrations of PFAS, raising both environmental and public health concerns.
